Visit www.medicare.gov to find an economical part D plan for your medications and to learn more about Medicare benefits. Medicare Open Enrollment is from October 15 to December 15. Terms You Should Know
Individual Mandate. Most Americans who are not covered by another plan (e.g. parent’s plan, employer’s plan) must sign up for health insurance or pay a penalty due at the time of income tax filing. Some people may be exempt from the insurance requirement due to financial hardship or religious beliefs.
Employer Mandate. Employers with 50 or more full time employees must provide coverage to their employees. This mandate became effective on January 1, 2015.
Catastrophic Insurance. A less expensive form of insurance with higher deductibles that satisfies the Individual Mandate.
Out-of-pocket Costs. All costs not covered by insurance. A cap of $6,500 goes into effect in 2015.
